Michael Clark is considered to be one of Scotland's most popular painters. Born in Ayr in 1959, Michael graduated from Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) in 1983. Working for the BBC in Glasgow, Michael moved to London in 1989 where he worked as a freelance art director and illustrator but continued painting and selling highly successfully throughout this period. Michael and his family returned to Scotland in 1999 where he has painted full-time and to great acclaim, exhibiting in high profile mixed and solo shows in London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Oxford, Suffolk and Norfolk. He is an elected member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, an elected member of the Royal Scottish Society of painters in Watercolour and a holder of the Diploma, Paisley Art Institute.
Michael takes his style from the Scottish colourist tradition and spends considerable time painting and travelling in France, particularly Paris, Provence and Bordeaux and Italy.
'Michael Clark's paintings are a celebration of colour, light and form and more than that: they are a reason for uplift, a tender engagement with the unobtrusive but total substantial pleasures of the everyday thjings life brings to us'.
Professor Alan Riach, University of Glasgow.
