Hazel Battersby’s paintings are inspired by landscape, the hills, glens and coastal areas of Scotland and the Yorkshire landscape where she lives. She enjoys the initial marks that are made to the conversational layers that respond in stages to develop a painting.
Through her explorations of mark-making, drawing and collage, both abstract and descriptive properties develop, and as they extend into paintings this continues to shift and change. There is a sense of discovery through colour and form in each painting. As she builds up and removes layers there is the emergence of an image, that takes command of the painting. Her works are essentially abstract, but she doesn’t lose the landscape elements from which she began her process. We are delighted to welcome this talented young artist to our Scottish portfolio of painters and sculptors.
