Born in Glasgow, 1982, Frank To graduated from the University of Huddersfield and went on to gain a Master of Fine Art from Duncan of Jordanstone Art College, and began his career as a figurative painter. For one so young Frank To has already established an enviable reputation in his field of figurative work. His Plague Doctor series of paintings attracted much attention in Scotland when it was picked up by the media and resulted in an almost sell-out show for the young painter. This success has only made Frank more determined to carve out a successful career as a painter.
To’s painting technique is inspired by a story attributed to the Renaissance sculptor, Michelangelo. It was said Michelangelo could visualise the human form within a block of marble. To, similarly, teases out figures from initially abstract images. Other influences on his work are drawn from literary sources, such as the Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle.
In recent years he has exhibited alongside such artists as Peter Howson and Damien Hirst. He has begun to build up a loyal following and has attracted the attention of some high profile buyers. Actor Patrick Stewart, attracted by the unusual subject matter has several of Frank’s paintings in his collection.
